40 / YOUNGER NOW
Poems about what's to come
40
by Steve Veasey
Dear grey beard hairs,
I’m not opposed to
you crashing the party…
but, do you think you could settle a bit?
Maybe read the room
and be a little less wiry and scraggly?
Yours truly,
–Acceptance
YOUNGER NOW
by Steve Veasey
I’m younger today than I’ve ever been.
Sprightly opening the box of a fresh Lego set.
Rewatching The Office antics on the daily.
Choreographing a dance to “The Fate of Ophelia”.
Wearing graphic t-shirts that are much too taut.
Body modding on a whim with a Ghibli tattoo.
Sneaking peanut butter M&M’s into a matinee.
Hopping from a moving taxi to catch a Snorlax.
Adding lol to the end of every text lol.
My spirit never throws its back out.
My brain is minty fresh like a Tic Tac.
Scrolling the dial back further to my birth year
to prove to a bot that I’m not a bot.
Saturn will return for me three times.
Evading the chokehold of adulthood
that threatens to squelch.
My secret? Sheer delight:
adding more candles on a cake
shines a much brighter light.
